Local Literacy Plan information

The focus of learning for the Fall 2018 Professional Learning Day  will be on building collective capacity to support student Literacy Development and Growth at all levels and across contents, a goal established in the district’s Local Literacy Plan.

ALL morning events are held at Theodore Roosevelt High School

  • Coffee and tea in the cafeteria starting at 7:30

  • 8:00am: Everyone will participate in one of two overview sessions to share the latest research about how students learn to read, including regarding brain development, with some recommendations for classroom application that will be useful for later conversations in the day. PK-5 Staff will be in the RHS Media Center, and all grade 6-12 Staff will be in the RHS Auditorium.

  • 9:00 am: This will be followed by facilitated discussions with grade level and department members to take steps to apply literacy principles to practice, and includes time for everyone to visit the expanded Wellbeing Fair with numerous vendors, healthy snacks and prizes sometime during the morning.  Locations and times will vary.

Everyone will also have a block of time for lunch and teacher-directed learning time. As in the past, all staff members are expected to register plans on this short survey.  This will help the professional learning advisory team to know what you are working on and how we can help, both that day and moving forward. You are strongly encouraged to connect learning activities to your professional growth plan or the local literacy plan. Respond no later than the end of the day Wednesday, October 10.  Expectations:
         • Staff will determine most critical learning/ collaboration needs and will develop a plan to pursue any of them over three hours in the afternoon.
         • Plan will connect to one or more of PL Framework topics
         • Staff are strongly encouraged to connect learning activities to their professional growth plans and/ or the Local Literacy Plan
         • Briefly describe learning/ accomplishment in follow-up survey sent 10/12

After that block, collaborative learning will continue at the buildings with grade-level, course, and interdisciplinary planning conversations.  Each team will use the learning from the day to develop 1-3 specific and actionable goals regarding their own literacy instruction.
