One way to have your student stay on track over the summer is to read, read, read! SMS Language Arts Department has required summer reading lists for each grade. Each student will be required to complete a project related to the reading. All books are available at the Kent Free Library and students must choose 1 book from the list to read this summer. Good reading habits encouraged now can create life long benefits!
The Makers of Tomorrow Engineering Summer Camp is for students entering 7th, 8th, and 9th grade, where they will work in teams to dream, design, and prototype. Throughout the one-week program students will learn engineering principles and hone their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They will gain experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs, work on state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment, and discover their future career opportunities in engineering.

This week your student was assigned a personalized summer reading goal for the Accelerated Reading online program. They will bring home a flyer that provides important login details for home access to their STAR reading accounts this summer. At this site, they will have access to numerous online books at their reading level. As they read and complete the comprehension tests over the summer, they earn points to win prizes such as an Ipad mini, a tablet, or other gifts and a pizza party in August. Please refer to this to help your student maintain and even improve their reading skills during summer break.
How do I know what to read? There are a few ways to find a book that is in the AR program (most books are, so this is usually not a problem). Log into STAR with your normal user name and password (students know this info). Login here
Find a Book: Type in a title of a book you are interested in reading or you can look at the books recommended for you. These are based on your STAR tests from this past school year, so they are just right for you and on your reading level. Here you will find how many points you can earn from reading and testing on any book. Also, ALL of your summer reading books are in Accelerated Reader!
How to Test- Once you have read the book, log into your STAR account. Choose Take a Quiz (choose the ORANGE Take a Quiz box; this will be new to you). Type in the title of your book. When the title shows up, make sure the correct author is listed. Sometimes, there are several books with the same title. Take Quiz. Choose the appropriate box: I was read to, I read with someone, or I read by myself. Start Quiz. Rate the book, and then your score will show up. From here, you can print a TOPS report to see your progress towards your goal.
Thank you and have a productive summer break.
