FOREIGN LANGUAGE ACADEMY
June 13, 2010 through July 10, 2010
Kent State University
If you are interested in expanding your language study (Arabic, Chinese or Hindi) please read about the opportunity at KSU this coming summer, which is at no cost to students and their families.
Kent State University with the generous support of a federal government STARTALK grant announces the 2010 Regents STARTALK Foreign Language Academy. The 2010 Academy focuses on new learners of the critical languages of Arabic, Chinese, and Hindi. [Elementary Russian and Japanese will be offered this summer at Kent State as regular courses, not as part of the Academy.] The 2010 Academy builds on the foundation of the successful 2007, 2008 and 2009 Regents Foreign Language Academies at Kent State University. The 2010 Academy is entirely free for those accepted.
The Academy begins with a four-week residential summer language immersion experience at Kent State University that focuses on Ohio high school students who will be juniors and seniors during the 2010-2011 academic year. The Academy offers the opportunity to study Arabic, Chinese, and Hindi for college credit. [Students of Arabic and Chinese will receive five college credits and students of Hindi will receive four.]
Students who complete the summer academy will continue to earn additional credits [five for Arabic and Chinese, and four for Hindi] through several mini-immersion Saturday sessions supported by distance learning during the 2010-2011 academic year. Students who are admitted to the academy are required to enroll for both the summer and academic year sessions. Recent high school graduates are also welcome to apply provided they can demonstrate that they will continue to study the language in the college they will attend.
The academic year component is supported through PSEOP (Post Secondary Education Option), so all students applying for the summer Academy must complete PSEOP forms for the academic year component as well. The deadline to register for PSEOP in most Ohio high schools is March 31. The deadline for applications to the Academy is April 15, 2010. Please discuss PSEOP with your guidance counselor. Students who do not wish or are unable to take the academic year component are still welcome to apply to the Academy but would need to cover the entire cost of room, board, and tuition.
Students will be notified of acceptance no later than May 15, 2010.
The 9 Saturday sessions for the 2010-11 Academy have been scheduled for: Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 13, Dec. 18, Jan. 15, Feb. 19, Mar 12, Apr 16, May 14. [These dates were chosen so as not to interfere with scheduled ACT and SAT testing dates.] All academic year sessions will be held at the Kent Campus and will run from 9AM-3PM. Lunch will be provided.
Both the summer academy and follow up academic year sessions are at no cost to students and their families. The Academy will provide for tuition, room, board, admission fees and textbooks. The program provides students with the use of a laptop with all the appropriate foreign-language software for the 11-month period of the Academy.
The summer immersion academy requires students to live in residence in a language house at Kent State University for the entire program, except for the Fourth of July weekend, which students can spend at home with their families. Students will attend daily classes followed by evening immersion activites, during which they will be exposed to Arabic, Chinese, and Hindi films, games, music, cuisine and conversation. Field trips will connect students with native speakers of these languages in the local community.
