Identification Key :: Black Fly

Black flies feed on the blood of mammals, including humans, but males feed mostly on nectar. Black flies are a common nuisance in the United States.  Eggs are laid in running water. After hatching  the larva attach themselves to the substrate. While attached, the larva open fan like catchers around their mouths to catch incoming particles. They pupate underwater and emerge as flying adults.
