From the Principal
Dear Parents,
Lately I have had numerous conversations with 8th grade families and students about the transition to Roosevelt High School. Most of the students are excited, with the natural uneasiness of not knowing what to expect. Parents, I seem to sense the same feelings coming from you as well. These feelings are both natural and understandable. Roosevelt is a larger building with more course selections, more students (who are larger and more mature), and the upcoming challenges of the next stages of adolescence. We want you to know that we recognize these natural feelings and recognize the importance of a successful transition from Stanton Middle School to Theodore Roosevelt High School.
Because we recognize the importance of a smooth transition from middle school to high school, Roosevelt High School and Stanton Middle School have created a Transition Team. The Transition Team is comprised of 8th grade teachers, the 8th grade counselor, RHS teachers that teach predominantly 9th grade classes, and RHS guidance counselors. The Transition Team has received professional development regarding the importance of the 8th to 9th grade transition, and has researched effective components of successful national transition programs. The Transition Team brought back the information and data they gathered, and have tailored a transition plan to meet the needs of our students, our families, and Kent City Schools. This plan starts in early February of the 8th grade year and continues throughout the students’ freshmen year. The plan is too extensive to list all of its components here, so here is just a sampling:
February 18th – 8th grade Open House was held at RHS
February 22nd – 8th grade students returned registration sheet
March 2nd-4th & 8th – Mrs. Rutzky meets with Stanton students
April 30th – Course verification sheets mailed to students
May 4th – RHS students visit Stanton to discuss student life at RHS
August 16th-20th – Schedules mailed home to students
August 19th – Freshmen Parent Orientation– 7:00 p.m. @ RHS
August 20th – Freshmen “Kickoff” Orientation/Transition to RHS
August 25th – 1st day of classes for freshmen only
We hope that this plan eases some of our student and parent concerns. As most of you know, much of my experience has been at RHS, and I would love to answer any questions or concerns you or your students may have.
Sincerely,
Tom Larkin, Principal

All of our families should now have access to grades via Progress Book. If you are a 6th grade parent, you should have received your child’s log-in information at Back to School Night. All 7th and and 8th grade passwords and log-in information should have come to you via a letter from the school in the mail. If you need another copy of your password/log-in information, or need help with Progress Book, please contact our secretary: Ms. Cathy Wirick at (330) 676-8620.
Attention all students and parents:
6th, 7th, and 8th grade rotation classes (art, physical education, health, interpersonal communications, industrial technology, life skills, library/media) will be changing this week and next. It is ideal that the student keep a copy of their own personalized schedule in order to travel efficiently to the next rotation. If a schedule is misplaced, please come to the guidance office and we will get you another one. If students or parents have any questions, please direct them to the school counseling secretary, Cathy Wirick. You can find her in the guidance office or by calling 330-676-8620.
