Students of Kent City Schools have an opportunity to tap into their potential to become not only the civic leaders of tomorrow through their core studies but also participants in the larger world community through the study of a foreign language. They begin their cultural and linguistic journey through a brief exposure to four different languages in the exploratory program at the middle school level. Students then make a decision and commitment to their foreign language by choosing a language of focus. The RHS Foreign Language Department is happy to work with you (the parent or the student) and to help you should you need assistance with this decision. There are a couple of considerations to weigh in the process of making your decision to take a foreign language.

Why take a foreign language?

Foreign language study offers students a chance to broaden their worldview as well as their base knowledge of his/her native language. In addition, three credits of foreign language study are required of any student seeking an Honors Dipoloma. This requirement is then followed by the recommendation (and in many cases, requirement) of most colleges and universities that the more foreign language that a student studies in high school (at least two years), the better their chances for unconditional acceptance and an “on-time” college graduation. Students who take four years of one language in high school are placed into a unique category among their peers who have not studied foreign language. These students may then “test out” of higher education foreign language requirements, which means that these students could enter a college or university with up to 15 college credits, thereby shaving quite a bit of time off of their university study, not to mention saving an immense amount of money – all by studying four years of foreign language in high school.
