Novel Assignment (notecard)

CP English 11/12

Mrs. McComas

What a novel assignment!

One of your missions for this semester is to select and read two novels on your own.  Here are some guidelines for selection:  Your novels…

  • may be from the same author
  • may be of the same genre: mystery, adventure, horror, “problem” novels, science-fiction, romance, historical fiction, non-fiction, etc.
  • may be considered young adult (YA) or adult (NOT XXX!) literature
  • may NOT be titles read in junior high or high school
  • NEED TO BE APPROVED BY MRS. MCCOMAS.  You must bring the book to class for approval.

I have several resources that list titles by genre and topics.  You may also use this web address to read descriptions of some popular books:

      http://www.ala.org/yalsa/booklists/index.html

You must select your first choice and bring it to class with you on Monday, September 31, 2009.  Please check the syllabus each Monday to know which days you will need your novel in class.   Your first book must be completed by the end of the first grading period.  You will complete and turn in a note card for each book you read.

Note card guidelines (Assignment #1:completed for each book)

I will provide the note cards for this assignment.  On the left side of the top line, write the title of the book.  On the right side of the top line, write the genre of the book.  Then complete the following list on the subsequent lines:

1)      author’s name, publisher, date, number of pages, YA or adult literature

2)      a descriptive summary

3)      Identify the type of person who would probably enjoy this book.

4)      Comment on the cover art.

5)      Why did you choose the book?

6)      Rate the book using the code below and explain your rating.

7)      Your name

Quality

5*   Hard to imagine it being better

4*   Better than most

3*   Readable

1*   Hard to understand how it got published

Author Report (Assignment #2: completed near the end of the first semester)

Create a one-page flyer on a selected author highlighting the author’s life and annotated bibliography of selected works.  Your flyer should cite the sources of your information and represent an overview of the author’s life and works.  (I’ll show you an example in class and will give you some class time to complete.)

Booktalk Project (Assignment #3: completed near the end of each semester)

You will write and present a one-minute booktalk on one of the titles you have read each semester.  Hand in typed script, but know it well enough that you do NOT read it to us.  Grade is based on content and presentation style.  You may use props and techniques we will discuss in class.  Remember, you are encouraging us to read this book!
