WEEK OF JANUARY 23-27

January 20th, 2012

We have completed the reading for our Mythology unit and are now working on our own “Personal Odyssey”–a timeline to reflect the journey of our lives thus far.  We have worked in class to plan and organize this project.  Most students will be able to finish the entire project during class time.  The completed timeline  is due on Friday, January 27.

Starting on Thursday, the students will begin work on our next topic, “Reading for Life.”  This will include an overview of public and consumer documents  and a short unit on the newspaper.

ASSIGNMENTS: JANUARY

January 5th, 2012

We’re starting the new year by reading  very condensed versions of Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey.  This will complete our unit on mythology.  The students are also working to complete their independent reading  mythology journals.  Here are next week’s  deadlines:

The Trojan War  (and study guide)–Wednesday, January 10

Independent reading journals–          Friday, January 13*

* Please note that journals turned in early (before 1/13) are eligible for extra credit.

ASSIGNMENTS: DECEMBER

December 12th, 2011

December is Mythology Month:  The students have begun their short study of classical mythology.  We have read the story of Hercules and his 12 labors and are now spending the final week before Christmas break reading a selection of myths chosen by the students.  After break, we will read two more major works (adaptations!)–The Trojan War–from Homer’s Iliad–and The Oddysey.

Despite some discouragingly low grades at interim time, most of the students have renewed their efforts and are working hard to bring up their grades.  Many of you will be very pleased when you check Progressbook again.  Please encourage your children to continue putting forth their best effort and honoring all due dates.

No regular homework will be assigned between now and January 6.  Unless your child has been absent or has failed to turn in past assignments, the literature work will be completed during regular class time.

October 14th, 2011

We have just completed our first major unit–Short Stories.  the students have begun learning how to analyze literature by focusing on basic story structure:  plot, characterization, conflict, setting and theme.  This initial study provides a fundamental understanding and vocabulary for our year’s work with novels, mythology and other fictional work.  We will begin reading our first novel, Lois Lowry’s The Giver, by the end of this week.  In the meantime, we will be working with vocabulary and dictionary skills during class time.  A reading schedule for the novel will be posted by the end of the week.

Due Date:  Mouthbooks (culminating activity for short stories) are due on Monday, 10-17.

LITERATURE PLANS: WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 19-23

September 21st, 2011

We are currently working on a short story unit.  In class, the students are reading several assigned stories that we discuss and use for lessons on short story elements.  Then the students select a minimum of 1 additional story per week to read in order to apply the lessons we have learned.  For any one desiring to earn an “A” or “B,” additional stories must be read.  Please ask your child to show you his/her story journal.  More complete instructions are included on the first page.

This week’s schedule:

Tuesday, 9/20            Characterization graphic due

Wednesday, 9/21        Journal I due (4 assigned pages in short story journal)

Thursday, 9/22            Log #2 and vocab. words from 2nd elective story due

I encourage the students to complete the work for additional stories in order to enhance their grades.
