Jason and I on Capitol Hill. This was part of our exciting trip to Washington DC. I was chosen as one of the top eight counselors in the country by The American School Counselor Association. This is such an honor and I am humbled greatly. I work with the greatest team of counselors and one of the strongest programs in the country. Our duties in DC included talking to many politicians and important people in the Dept. of Education on the importance of School Counselors in education. It is our duty to support the social/emotional, safety, academic, and career aspirations of all children.

I often receive informative articles from Jeff Langstaff at the Kent Police Dept. This is an excellent article for parents to view about Cyber-bullying and Cyber-texting.
National Family Day Sept. 28th!!!
September 25th, 2009On September 28th, join families across the nation in celebrating National Family Day by having dinner with your children. According to extensive research, the more families dine together, the less likely their children are to smoke, drink or use other drugs. And we’re not talking gourmet meals with finely dressed children sitting around the dinner table. We’re talking parents and their children, sharing a meal and conversation together, whether it is meat and potatoes or Chinese take-out. The most important item on the menu is YOU!
Know! the Seven Secrets to Successful Family Dinners (CASA, 2009):
Start the pattern of family dinners when children are young
Involve your kids in menu planning and preparation
Establish fun meal-time rituals, like lighting candles and telling stories
Turn off the TV, and forbid texting and phone calls during dinner
Talk about your day, ask about their day
Keep the conversation positive and make sure everyone gets to speak
Grab a board game to continue family time and keep the conversation going

It has been a great first week. Please feel free to call with any concerns you might have about scheduling or transitioning for the seventh grade “world.” It would be great if each of our students join some sort of extra-curricular activity. We have so much to offer at Stanton. Experts have written that children who are in extra-curricular activities seem to be more comfortable at school and perform better in their classes.
