About Kent Schools
Kent citizens have a history of enthusiastically supporting their schools,
a reflection of the community's aspirations and vision for its young people.
Community partnerships help form a solid bond between local businesses, industries
and the schools.
Kent State University and the Kent Schools collaborate on a number of academic
projects, including shared instructor time, staff development, cutting-edge
technology projects and training for teachers.
A five-year Strategic Plan, focusing on teaching and learning, guides the future
of the Kent Schools. As a Standard Bearer School District, one of only 10 in the
United States, Kent Schools play a key role in this prestigious, national school
reform initiative.

What makes the Kent Schools special?
- A diverse student body combines many backgrounds, talents and cultures.
- All district buildings are wired for Internet, coaxial cable, telephone and networking,
with additional fiber optic cables for upgrading. Each school has at least one computer lab.
- A continuum of support is available for students with special needs, including the latest
in technological aids for students.
- Enrichment is provided from kindergarten through twelfth grade for gifted and academically
talented children.
- A character education program helps integrate positive character traits into the curriculum
at every grade level while addressing issues important to families and the community.
Theodore Roosevelt High School
- About 1,400 students are enrolled in grades 9 through 12.
- TRHS has been honored with the U.S. Department of Education
Excellence in Education award.
- Students choose from more than 200 courses, including electives
in art, speech, drama, journalism, music, foreign languages, math, English,
science and social studies. Eight Advanced Placement (AP) classes are offered.
- Nearly 20 Career Programs available through the Six District Educational
Compact, including the Manufacturing and Pre-Engineering Academy, a Tech Prep
program headquartered at Roosevelt.
- Nearly 70 percent of Roosevelt graduates attend a four-year college.
- Students qualify as National Merit Scholars at five to eight times the
national average.
- Academic achievement is recognized by the nation's colleges and universities,
resulting in nearly $5 million in scholarships offered to seniors each year.
- A dozen computer labs, including a distance-learning lab, help students connect
directly with resources around the world.
- Technology course offerings include CD-ROM/digital photography, networking,
desktop publishing and software applications, as well as a Certified CISCO Networking
Academy.
- Students can choose from over 60 clubs, including top-level co-curricular
activities, including a nationally qualifying debate team, as well as numerous
leadership opportunities.
- More than 750 students participate in Roosevelt and Stanton's vocal and
instrumental music programs, with orchestra, marching band, wind symphony and
concert band ranking tops in national competitions.
- Twenty-three high school boys and girls sports programs are available to
Roosevelt students, with consistent district, regional and state qualifiers.
Athletes in all sports maintain an average 3.2 GPA during their sports season.
- Recent building renovations include a new entranceway and cafeteria, as
well as eight renovated science rooms and art and music rooms.
- A new weight room/fitness center for athletes and community
members is funded by the Rough Rider Association.
- Grants totaling nearly $360,000 fund advocacy programs for academically at-risk students.
Stanton Middle School
- About 800 students are enrolled in grades 6, 7 and 8.
- Opened in 1999 and adjoining the high school campus, Stanton's design incorporates the latest research on middle school education, particularly the team-teaching approach.
- Academic "houses" for the sixth, seventh and eighth grades each contain three clusters of five classrooms, including a science lab, flexible classroom space, a team planning room and computer workstations.
- A two-story, state-of-the-art media center features the latest in computer technology. A dual purpose cafeteria/auditorium has a full-size stage surrounded by band, choir, orchestra and ensemble rooms.
- A wide variety of courses is offered for all students, including four foreign languages, video production, life skills and computers.
- An industrial technology lab equipped with 15 modular computer workstations provides all seventh and eighth graders experiences in robotics, aerodynamics, graphics/animation and CAD.
Elementary Schools
- About 1,750 students are enrolled in grades pre-kindergarten through 5.
- Five neighborhood elementary schools provide a strong curriculum with high academic expectations. Specialists teach art, physical education and music.
- A fee-based, before- and after-school care program is available at every elementary building.
- Technology literacy begins early as students work in state-of-the-art computer labs or on classroom computers.
- Multi-age classroom options are designed so students have the opportunity to accelerate beyond the grade-level curriculum.
- A tuition-based, full-day kindergarten program is available, allowing increased time for individual attention and enrichment.
- Strong parent involvement is characterized by active parent-teacher organizations and volunteer programs.
- A full-day, tuition-based preschool program, along with half-day pre-school programs, is housed at Davey Elementary and is open to all district three-, four- and five-year-olds in the district.
