Kent Girl Coders host Dr. Erica N. Montbach from Kent Displays

On December 14th the Kent Girl Coders hosted guest speaker Dr. Erica N. Montbach from Kent Displays. During her time with the Kent Girl Coders Dr. Montbach discussed the path that she took to get into the sciences (interest and coursework), what she does and how she got into developing technology for Kent Displays.

Thank you Dr. Montbach for spending time with the Kent Girl Coders, inspiring us to go into the sciences and giving us tips to succeed in traditionally male dominant careers!!

2014-App-Challenge-Hangout_FINAL

At age 17, Hugh Herr was one of the country’s best and most promising rock climbersuntilaclimbingaccidentclaimedbothofhislegsbelowtheknee. The accident changed the course of his life, setting him on the path to become the world’s leading designer of bionic limbs. In 2011 TIME magazine coined Herr the “Leader of the Bionic Age” due to his work in the field of biomechatronics– technology that marries human physiology with electromechanics. Currently, as Director of the Biomechatronics research group at the MIT Media Lab, he is pioneering a new class of biohybrid smart prostheses and exoskeletons to improve the quality of life for thousands of people with physical challenges.

  • The next steps in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge are:

1) Twenty-four (24) Best in Region winners will be selected from the Best in State teams around the country based on a judging rubric. Each of the twenty-four (24) regional winning schools (12 middle school and 12 high school teams) will receive $5,000 cash grants plus virtual support and training to help them build out their app concepts.

2) A distinguished panel of STEM educators and corporate innovators will then judge the Best in Region teams’ app concepts and designs based on their online submissions and their presentations during a live webinar. The four (4) top middle school and four top high school teams will be selected and announced as 2015 Verizon Innovative App Challenge winners.

3) Each of the eight (8) winning schools (4 middle school and 4 high school teams) will receive additional $15,000 cash grants plus professional support and training to help them build out their app concepts and bring them to life. Each student on the eight winning teams will receive a Samsung Galaxy Tab and be invited to present their developed apps in person – on their new tablets – at the 2015 National Technology Student Association Conference in Dallas, Texas in June, 2015.
