August 15th, 2016 by Gayle Horning

Welcome To Social Studies!

Welcome to Sixth Grade Social Studies! In sixth grade Social Studies, students will begin to study the themes and essential elements of geography. As students move through the beginning part of the school year studying the elements and the themes, they will begin to apply the elements and themes of geography to study the Eastern Hemisphere and the ancient civilizations that originated in the Eastern Hemisphere. In addition, students will complete an economics unit.

Social Studies objectives will be assessed through class work, homework, group activities, projects, quizzes and tests.

Social Studies Class Materials

  1. Binder (shared with Science)- Each student is responsible for his or her own binder.
  1. Lined paper
  2. Writing Utensils
  3. Agenda planner- Students will record homework and important due dates each day.
  1. Social Studies Textbook- We will keep our textbooks in the class. Textbooks can be taken home if needed.

Social Studies Homework

Homework will not be given more than a few times per week. All class assignments, including homework, will be assigned a due date. Class assignments, including homework, should be completed with effort. Unfinished classwork will become homework. Students will be held accountable for late or missing homework. Arrangements will be made for students to complete all late or missing homework. Parents will be notified of patterns of late or missing homework. If you notice your child is having more work to do at home than usual, you should contact me. They may not be using their class time wisely.

Social Studies Vocabulary

There will be an emphasis on Social Studies vocabulary. Social Studies vocabulary will be assigned and assessed often. Each student will maintain a vocabulary binder, including a section for Social Studies. We will work on keeping the binder efficient and organized. These binders will be stored in the classroom, however, students may take them home as needed. This binder will include a vocabulary section for all four content areas.

Technology Policy

We will be using school computer labs frequently. Students are expected to use the school computers wisely. Computer privileges will be suspended for students that utilize the computers inappropriately. Alternative assignments will be provided to students that have lost computer privileges.

Grading Policy

Students will be evaluated based on completion and accuracy. Most homework and classwork activities are based on completion of the activity. Students will be notified prior to the assignment when homework and classwork will be graded for accuracy. All assessments are evaluated for accuracy. Multi-component projects will be evaluated using a combination of assessment techniques. Grades are posted in Progress Book. Progress Book is updated on a weekly basis, if not more often.

Communication

Parents and students should communicate often, especially when there are concerns or questions. Parents can email or call me at any time. I am available to meet with students before or after classes, or during lunch.
