Language Arts Class Information
August 15th, 2016 by Gayle Horning

                                                            Welcome to Language Arts!

Welcome to Sixth Grade Language Arts. Language Arts is the combination of reading and writing. In the sixth grade, students will explore fiction and nonfiction and the elements that make each unique. Students will complete two novel studies throughout the year. In addition, students will focus on narrative, argument, and informational writing through formal and informal writing activities.

Language Arts Class Materials

  1. Binder- Each student is responsible for his or  her own binder. Binders will be stored in the classroom. They  may be taken home if needed.
  1. Lined paper
  2. Writing Utensils
  3. Agenda planner- Students will record homework and important due dates.

**We do not have one set Language Arts textbook. I use a variety of resources to support my teaching. All novels for our novel studies will be supplied by the teacher.

Language Arts Homework

All class assignments, including homework, will be assigned a due date. There may be independent reading that has to be done outside of the class during our novel studies. Homework will be assigned, but not more than a few times each week. Unfinished classwork will become homework. Students will be held accountable for late or missing homework. Arrangements will be made for students to complete all late or missing homework. Parents will be notified of patterns of late or missing homework. If you notice your child is having more work to do at home than usual, you should contact me. They may not be using their class time wisely.

Language Arts Vocabulary

There will be an emphasis on vocabulary in all content areas. Language Arts vocabulary will be assigned and assessed often. Each student will maintain a vocabulary binder, including a section for Language Arts. Each student will maintain a vocabulary binder to be used for all content areas: Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. These binders will be stored in the classroom, however, the binders may go home as needed. Students will be responsible for keeping their binders neat and organized.

Technology Policy

We will be using school computer labs frequently. Students are expected to use the school computers wisely. Computer privileges will be suspended for students that utilize the computers inappropriately. Alternative assignments will be provided to students that have lost computer privileges.  All students have a username and password that is unique to them. We will utilize Google Docs for creating and sharing assignments.

Grading Policy

Students will be evaluated based on completion and accuracy. Most homework and classwork activities are based on completion of the activity. Students will be notified prior to the assignment when homework and classwork will be graded for accuracy. All assessments are evaluated for accuracy. Multi-component projects, such as novel studies and writing projects, will be evaluated using a combination of assessment techniques. Grades are posted in Progress Book. Progress Book is updated on a weekly basis, if not more often. Be sure to set up a Progress Book account for your child so they can check their grades and assignments.

Communication

Parents and students should communicate often, especially when there are concerns or questions. Parents can email or call me at any time. I am available to meet with students before or after classes, or during lunch.
