In this section of our Web site, we will keep you updated about the progress of our three District Advisory Committees. You will be able to review meeting summaries and to see when meetings are scheduled. You are invited to attend any meeting. Please read the description below.
The Kent Board of Education recently approved the formation of several District Advisory Committees (DAC) to provide feedback and develop recommendations as the Board considers a number of strategic changes designed to maintain the district’s commitment to financial stability and quality education. The three committees, which will operate according to Board policy and serve in an advisory capacity only, are: the Franklin Elementary Transition Committee, the Redistricting Committee, and the Roosevelt High School Pool Committee. Committee reports will be presented to the Board and results will be available to the public.
The committees were formed to help the Board implement cost-saving measures, which are needed to avoid a projected deficit, expected to occur in 2017 unless savings are implemented now. Among those measures is the closure of Franklin Elementary, whose enrollment has steadily decreased over the past several years. As a result of the closure, the Board also is considering how the district’s elementary students will be reassigned to make best use of the remaining elementary buildings while maintaining appropriate class sizes. In addition, the district is considering a number of ways to increase revenues from its operation of the Roosevelt High School pool.
The Board has asked the three committees to review information and make their recommendations at the March 18 Board of Education meeting so that the District can inform parents where their children will attend school next year before spring break. The District will then be able to present teacher contracts to the Board at its April meeting.
The District has already begun to identify potential members for each of the DACs. At the Board’s request, the Franklin Transition Team will be comprised of staff and parents of Franklin Elementary students, and the Redistricting Committee will include a representative parent and staff from each elementary school, as well as the principal from each building.
Residents who would like to be considered for one of the DACs should call the Superintendent’s office at 330-676-7610. Space on these committees is limited, so those who are interested are urged to call as soon as possible.
