Already into March! This week, the students will be finishing up their unit on soil and will be beginning a unit on landforms and topography maps. I love this next unit because the students have many chances for hands-on activities. Below is how the week should run:
Monday 3/5: During class today, the students will begin by talking about the soil labs that we did on Friday. It was a very busy class on Friday and we are going to take some time and reflect on what we learned through our labs. From there the students will complete their soil review with a partner to prepare for our review game and quiz tomorrow. To end class, if we have time, the students are going to play a review game where they compete against their classmates for an extra point on their test (it will be a basketball review game). HW – Study for quiz tomorrow on soil.
Tuesday 3/6: The students will take a final assessment on soil today. They will also take a pre-test on landforms and topography. Due to having extra time after the assessments, we will probably begin our landforms notes. If you would like to see the notes or PowerPoint for this unit, please see the tabs above.
Wednesday 3/7: Today, the students are going to finish their landforms notes from yesterday and begin the topography map notes. The students will complete a couple practices to help them understand the features on a topography map. To end class, the students will complete a mountain building worksheet as well as a few topography map feature practice worksheets. HW – Finish any practice worksheets that were not finished in class.
Thursday 3/8: Today, the students will take a look at a topography map of Kent. Using their notes, they will find different features we learned about yesterday in class to find various topography map features on their map. Next, the students will begin a contour map lab. In this lab, the students have a pre-shaped landform in a tub. By adding water to the tub, the students can see how a topography map is made of a landform. By the time the students have filled the tub completely, they will have a tracing of a topography map of the landform they have in their tub. By the end of class, the students should have a tracing of the wax tracings they did on their landform tubs.
Friday 3/9: To begin class today, the students will finish their contour map lab that they started yesterday. At this time, the students will finish labeling their maps that they created from their landform yesterday. Next, we will begin a topography map shape creation project. In this project, the students will create their own landform shape with construction paper and then create various layers to their landform shape. From there, the students will then do a crayon rubbing of their landform shape and create a topography map from their crayon rubbing that includes the features we looked for on the Kent topography map. HW – Finish making topography map of your created landform.
