[PDF] The Five-Year Forecast Update is the presentation that Treasurer Debbie Krutz gave at the board meeting on May 13, 2014

March 20, 2014

Dear Kent Parents and Guardians,

At the meeting this Tuesday night, the Kent Board of Education voted to modify the district’s elementary boundaries following its decision to close Franklin Elementary at the end of this school year. As you probably know, part of our district-wide cost-savings plan is to close Franklin Elementary because of declining enrollment and financial considerations.

The Board approved a resolution that reassigns Franklin students to the Walls and Davey elementary buildings. Students living west of State Route 43 up to and including students living on Ravenna Road will attend Davey Elementary. Students living east of State Route 43, as well as those who live north of Ravenna Road and west of State Route 43 (the west Twin Lakes and Sugar Bush Knolls neighborhoods) will attend Walls Elementary.

The Board’s action follows the recommendation of a District Advisory Committee that met twice to explore different redistricting options. Three committees were formed to help the Board implement cost-saving measures, which are needed to avoid a projected deficit, expected to occur in 2017 unless savings are implemented now.

This attendance plan balances our enrollment at Davey and Walls Elementary Schools. As part of this cost-saving measure, our goal is to operate our four elementary buildings more efficiently. The District Advisory Committee looked carefully at enrollment numbers, transportation issues, and space availability. I thank them for their hard work.

Please call me if you have other questions.

Sincerely,

Joe Giancola
Superintendent
