Greetings! This week ends the first month of the year and takes us into February, which happens to represent Black History Month! I have a several activities in store for the students to commemorate the achievements of African Americans; some will be completed in class, but one of the activitie will be one that the students can complete for extra credit outside of class…

We are working in our Writer’s Notebooks by writing original examples of Smiley Face tricks and completing our first Dailie, which is an unique assignment that integrates writing, grammar, and literature. The students will have the opportunity to read a brief passage and analyze it in terms for its stylistic devices, grammar usage, and literary elements. We begin this technique this semester and continue it throughout the second year of the loop on this team.

Now, back to Black History Month…At the end of this week, the students will be beginning the celebration of Black History Month by completing a scavenger hunt in the library. As the month progresses, we will complete a different activity in class, but for extra credit, the students will be encouraged to see the movie, Red Tails, which is now showing at various theatres; it features the Tuskeegee Airmen. There is a link to the background of the Tuskeegee Airmen on this page (to the right); please see this link before making plans to view the movie. As a culminating assigment to watching the movie, students will write a movie review of Red Tails. Those who are interested in this opportunity should see Ms. Cobb for the guidelines for this assignment. I am hoping all students will be inspired to see this movie and celebrate Black History Month!
